Owls, those big-eyed, silent hunters, making hooting, barking, screeching noises in the night are variously depicted as having supernatural or even ominous capabilities.
In reality, they benefit from a complex set of specialized adaptations to allow them to hunt stealthily at night, such as asymmetrical ear holes to triangulate sound, strategically placed short, stiff wing feathers to diffuse air and mute noise, and exceptional night vision.
